Deck questions from Rhode Island homeowners

How much does a deck cost in Rhode Island?

There is no single RI price list. The best public benchmark is the 2025 Cost vs. Value report, which puts a 16×20 ft deck in New England at about $20,600 in pressure-treated wood and about $25,800 in composite. Smaller, low decks cost less; tall, multi-level or PVC decks with premium railings cost more. Get at least 2–3 written quotes.

Do I need a permit for a deck in RI?

Almost always. Decks are regulated under the Rhode Island State Building Code (RISBC-2, the one- and two-family dwelling code) and permits are issued by your city or town building official. Ask your building office about any exemptions rather than assuming.

How deep do deck footings need to be in RI?

Your building official sets this. Published examples: Cumberland's deck sheet calls for piers 40 inches below grade, and Charlestown lists a 3 ft 4 in frost depth. Check your own town's current requirements.

Do I need CRMC approval for a deck near the water?

If any part of the work is on a coastal shoreline feature or within 200 feet of one, the RI Coastal Resources Management Council generally requires a Council Assent in addition to your local building permit. CRMC staff can verify shoreline features for your lot.

Is composite worth it over pressure-treated wood?

Composite costs more up front (about $5,200 more on the 2025 New England benchmark deck) but doesn't need staining, and it recouped more at resale in that report (95.8% vs 79.1%). Wood is cheaper but needs regular cleaning and re-staining.

Are you a deck builder?

No. We're a free matching service. We share your request with independent local contractors who quote and do the work.

How do I check a deck contractor is legit?

Rhode Island requires contractors to be registered with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (crb.ri.gov), which has a public lookup. Ask for proof of insurance, a written contract and a payment schedule tied to progress.

When is the best time to book a deck builder in RI?

Many homeowners want decks done by late spring, so builders' calendars fill early. Getting quotes in fall and winter leaves time for design, permits and, near the coast, any CRMC review.

What does this service cost?

Nothing for homeowners. We may be paid by contractors for introductions. You're never obligated to hire anyone.
