How much does a deck cost in Rhode Island?

A typical mid-size deck in our region runs in the tens of thousands, and composite costs more than pressure-treated wood. Here's what the data says, and what makes your quote different.

Benchmark: 16×20 ft deck, New England, 2025Average job cost≈ per sq ft
Pressure-treated wood decking, PT frame, railing, stairs$20,603≈ $64
Composite decking, PT frame, railing, stairs$25,817≈ $81

Rough ranges by project (our estimates)

These ranges are our estimates, scaled from the benchmark above. They're for budgeting only. Real quotes depend on your site.

ProjectEstimated range
Small low deck or landing (~100–150 sq ft), pressure-treated$6,000–$12,000
Mid-size deck (~300–350 sq ft), pressure-treated$18,000–$26,000
Mid-size deck (~300–350 sq ft), composite$22,000–$32,000
Large, elevated or multi-level, composite/PVC with upgraded railings$35,000–$60,000+
Resurfacing (new boards and railings on a sound frame)Often well under a full rebuild, but only if the frame passes inspection

What pushes the price up

  • Height: second-story decks (common on RI multi-families) need longer posts, bracing, taller guards and more stairs.
  • Footings: footings must go below frost depth (for example, Cumberland requires piers 40 inches below grade). Ledge and rocky soil slow digging.
  • Decking and railings: PVC and premium composite cost more than PT; aluminum, cable and glass railings vary widely.
  • Shape and levels: angles, curves, built-in benches and lighting add labor.
  • Coastal requirements: stainless or heavier-galvanized hardware, possible engineering in flood zones, and CRMC review (see coastal decks).
  • Demolition of an old deck, and permits and plans.

How to compare quotes

  • Make sure each quote has the same size, material, railing and stair count.
  • Ask who pulls the permit and whether fees are included.
  • Ask what fasteners and connectors are used, and how the ledger is attached and flashed.
  • Check registration with the RI Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board.
  • Avoid paying most of the price up front.
